I used preen prior to planting and then again a few weeks ago, but just in between plants. It's working well except for these thistles! I know they are a terrible weed to kill. Any suggestions what I need to do for next years planting? If I use round up or similar weed killer this fall, will it ruin the chances of growing my garden in the same spot next year?

The only way to get rid of the thistle without destroying your garden is to dig them out by hand. Use a screwdriver and dig right down to the root. You must get the root or they will pop up again. Good Luck its a long process but works.
