August gardening around Portland, Oregon?

I need Ideas for late Summer and Fall Planting. We just purchased a home around portland and I want to landscape the yard, Im not sure which plants will make it-should I steer clear of summer annuals and perennials that are now on clearence? will an herb garden and ferns make it through the winter? Ideas and Facts for Rainy Portland/Pacific NW climate? Please help?

    Now is the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials because there is plenty of time to get them established before winter. Also because you can find many plants and trees on sale.

    You have to use your imagination with the perennials that look wilted. But they will most certainly come back beautiful next spring.

    eta: I’d stay away from annuals till next spring and summer.
